HARRACHOV
This important ski resort is located in the western part of the Giant Mountains, in the valley of the Mumlava river. It is a good starting point for walks to the source of the river Labe (the Elbe). In the years 1983 and 1992, the World Ski Jumping Championships took place there. Apart from ski jumping, Harrachov offers flume rous ski tows and well-kept slopes. The town is also well-known for its glass-making tradition. Cut glass products manufactured under the Bohemia Crystal label are justly world-famous. The local museum of glass presents the history of glass-making which began in Harrachov in the mid- 17th century. The nearest border crossing to Poland is only 3 km away from Harrachov. Harrachov in Winter: The resort offers 10 ski tows, 1 chair lift, 10 km of slopes of varying degrees of difficulty, about 80 km of cross-country trails, 6 ski schools for children and adults, snowboarding lessons, ski rental and ski service as well as rides on horse-drawn carriages. PEC POD SNĚŽKOU
This popular sports centre of the eastern part of the Giant Mountains is located along the river Úpa, on the slopes of the valleys Modrý důl and Obří důl in the foothills of the Sněžka Mountain (1,602 m). Sněžka is accessible by a cableway leading across the peak of Růžová Mountain. The village was established centuries ago when non-ferrous metal deposits were found in the area. The first written evidence of the village dates back to the year 1534. Until 1876, iron and arsenic ores were processed in the local furnaces built along the river. Pec is an ideal starting point for both short nad long trekking excursions. In winter, Pec is a popular sports resort offering good conditions for both alpine and cross- country skiing. There is a chair lift as well as numerous ski tows and slopes for skiers of all abilities. The slopes are interconnected which enables the use of a co ordinated system of season tickets, much popular with the tourists. In addition, there is a whole range of smaller ski tows scattered across the district of Velká Úpa. Ski Schools in Pec: The Ski School ŠPINDL is a filial of a well-known ski school based in Špindlerův Mlýn. It offers both skiing lessons and rental of ski equipment. The SIS Ski School provides lessons for both adults and children. Children aged 7 through 12 get a 25% discount. The Ski School Ploc is based in the Hela hotel in Velká Úpa. Ski Equipment Rentals in Pec Ski equipment can be rented at most local hotels. In addition, there are numerous other rentals in Pec, such as the SKI SERVICE - Peter Kos.
